Annuals. Culms solitary or tufted, erect, 40-120 cm tall, unbranched, fistular, glabrous. Leaf blades linear-lanceolate, 12-30 cm x 4-10 mm, flat, leaf base cordate, apex acuminate, glabrous, margin scabrid; leaf sheaths glabrous; ligule membranous, 3-5 mm long, obtuse. Inflorescence a loose, open or contracted, 10-40 cm long, nodding panicle with branches spreading or contracted. Spikelets pendulous, oblong-lanceolate, gaping, 2-3.5 cm long, with 2-3 florets, terminal floret reduced, other bisexual, fertile. Rachilla +/- glabrous, straight, not extending beyond florets, not disarticulating on maturity; floret callus not bearded; internodes short. Glumes lanceolate, subequal, as long as the spikelets, herbaceous, 7-9-nerved, back rounded, apex acuminate, awnless, persistent. Lemmas lanceolate-oblong, shorter than glumes, 1.2-2.5 cm long, leathery in lower half, base rounded, herbaceous and distinctly nerved above, 5-9- nerved, glabrous or nearly so, apex minutely and irregularly 2-4-denticulate; dorsally awned from nearly middle, awn straight, 2.5-6 cm or rudimentary or absent. Paleae ca. 5/6th length of lemma, 2-nerved, 2-keeled, keels ciliate, apex entire or 2- toothed. Stamens 3; anthers large, oblong, ca. 4.5 mm long. Ovary densely hairy throughout. Stigmas 2, plumose. Grain adherent to lemma and palea at maturity, deeply furrowed.
